90 count
This is an empirical formula based on Dr. Fung’s 60 years of clinical experience. Hemorrhoidsare a common affliction caused by a variety of factors. Biomedically, these include pregnancy, constipation, and straining during bowel movements. Individuals in professions that involvesitting for prolonged periods are also prone to hemorrhoids. In Chinese medicine, thepresenting pattern is one of damp-heat sinking. Thus, the primary goal of this formula is toclear damp-heat.
The chief herb is sweet wormwood (qing hao), which is bitter and pungent to clear heat anddampness. Chinese salvia (dan shen) unblocks meridians and activates blood, while quercetin(from Sophora japonica) strengthens blood vessels and arrests bleeding. Quercetin is especiallyvaluable for treating bleeding hemorrhoids because its actions are primarily directed atdamp-heat patterns of the large intestine. Chinese skullcap (huang qin) clears heat, driesdampness, and stops bleeding. Other herbs in this formula that address heat and damp-heatinclude rehmannia (sheng di huang), phellodendron (huang bai), and Japanese honeysuckle(jin yin hua).
Since heat consumes yin, and in cases of bleeding, there is a relative insufficiency of yin andblood, it is necessary to nourish yin and blood in order to effectively resolve such conditionsas hemorrhoids. Thus, in this formula, yin-blood nourishing herbs such as Chinese peony (baishao) and dong quai (dang gui) are added. Heal All (xia ku cao) clears heat, relieves yin deficiencyand yang excess, and resolves red, swollen tissues.
